I recently turned 40 and officially became a responsible adult. . . so I took a couple days off work. When the wilderness calls there's only one answer.
The forecast called for rain. Rain and clouds. Possibly snow, depending on elevation. The Siskiyou mountains aren't quite as high as their younger, volcanic cousins to the east, the Cascades, so I would have less of a chance of being buried under snow or losing the trail.

At only 130 square miles the Red Buttes Wilderness exists mostly in California yet is mainly accessed via Oregon. Elevation ranges from about 2800' – 6700' and encompasses a wide range of terrain: steep, rugged, rocky canyons and peaks, and lush, old-growth forest.
I hiked the majority of the wilderness last summer (approx. 34 miles over 4 days) and have wanted to come back ever since (preferably without the debilitating dehydration).

This hike begins at the Cook & Green trailhead at about 4700' and takes me five or six miles "south" on the PCT, toward the Boundary trail.
I think I spent more time in the tent than on the trail but it was great to be outside for a couple days and experience some of what mother nature has to offer.
